Joe Arpaio is the elected sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. He has self-styled himself as the US's toughest sheriff, and continues to be elected repeatedly and by large margins. Which is kind of scary when you consider some of the things he's done.Things like stage an assassination plot against himself, sending an innocent scapegoat to jail for several years, just to increase his own bravado. And no, this isn't a crack-pot conspiracy theory.

Turns out pink underwear wasn't as manly as he thought.
Eighteen year old Jimmy Saville became famous in 1999 for “attempting to assassinate Joe Apraio”. His image became famous as news crews were all over the scene when the bust occurred, only at the urging of Apraio's office. How did they know to tell the news crews where Saville would be arrested?
Because they organized the entire scheme from square one.
After managing to scare Saville into fearing for his safety unless he cooperated, they had an undercover police officer masquerading as a member of the mob go around with him and buy parts for a bomb. If this wasn't bad enough, the undercover officer even used the police departments own money to purchase the parts. Yes, Arpaio charged his own law enforcement agency to buy the parts for his own staged assassination.
The undercover officer then drove him to Arpaio's car, where there was already news crews and police officers waiting to arrest him for his “crime”.
Saville spent the next four years behind bars under a $1 million bail. He eventually was ruled innocent when he proved entrapment, one of the hardest defenses to prove due to having to provide irrevocable proof that the police department themselves organized the crime.
Even one of Arpaio's own officers got disgusted by the entire operation and testified against his own police department. The jury only took minutes to decide the Saville was innocent of all charges, and that Arpaio is the world's biggest ass hole.
Just to recap, a Sheriff of the United States staged an innocent man in a fake assassination plot in order to capture sensational images on the news to increase his reputation and electability, sending this innocent man to jail for years.
Arpaio continues to be elected to this day. Meanwhile America wonders why the rest of the world thinks they're crazy.
